The sections of the template

The bullet journal template has two main sections, the calendar, and the monthly '⏳ Future' sections.

The calendar - A long list of months with each month containing the days for that month. You'll add your tasks, notes and events under each day.

The future logs - Each month has a '⏳ Future' section that serves as a placeholder for activities that should be completed during that month but do not yet have a specific date.

The monthly log allows you to view all the events for a given month. You create this view by clicking on the bullet for the current month and then clicking on the star ⭐️ to save that view in the left hand sidebar.

The daily log allows you to quickly jump to today and work on the day's tasks and events, and add notes. You create this view by searching for 'Today' in the menu bar and then clicking on the star ⭐️ to save that view in the left hand sidebar.

How to use the template

1. Fill out the '⏳ Future' sections for each month with any items that will happen during that month but you don't have an exact date for - if you do have an exact date (for example a birthday or meeting, go ahead and add it to the right date for that month).

2. Search for 'Future' to filter all the '⏳ Future' sections from each month. Next click on the ⭐️ star in the menu bar to save this view and easily access it from the left-hand sidebar - this view is your future log. You can now clear the search by clicking the 'X' icon in the search bar.

3. Zoom into the current month by clicking on the bullet with that month's name and click on the ⭐️
star in the menu bar to save this view and to get back to it quickly - this is you monthly log. Each month you would 'un-star' this view, click on the next month and start that one. Access this section from the left-hand sidebar, under 'starred'. You can now return home by clicking the home icon in the menu bar.

4. Search for 'today' in the search bar and click on the ⭐️ star in the menu bar to save this view and to get back to it quickly from the left-hand sidebar - this is your daily log.You are ready to start using your bullet journal using the notation system in the next step.

5. Add tasks, notes and events to today's bullet using the following symbols.

• This is a task
• This is a completed task
- This is a note (For when you want to add important details to a task)
#e This is an event (The #e is a tag to quickly filter events by searching for it)
> This indicates a migrated task (You use this mark when you did not complete an item and you move it to a future date, like the day after) This helps you keep track of items you keep putting off and not completing. If you move migrate it again you can keep adding >>. This makes it easy to see which items either need to be done first, scheduled for some other time in the future or removed from your journal completely.

6. At the end of each month - migrate any incomplete tasks to the next month, delete incomplete tasks that aren't worth migrating.

7. Review the current month's '⏳ Future' section and schedule any items that are pending.

8. 'Un-star' the past month in the monthly log, click on the bullet for this month and start that view to create the new monthly log view.

7. Continue adding items and marking them as you complete them or migrate them in your daily log.

What is a bullet journal

A bullet journal is a personal organization system developed by Ryan Carroll. It's meant to be a quick and simple system for tracking to-do's, planning projects, goals and other activities. The system is light and easy to use especially if you've never used a system to get organised before.

It's a relatively flexible system that lets you plan out one day at a time, a week in advance, an entire month in advance, or even a year - depending on what you prefer. While the original bullet journal system was developed for a paper notebook, using Workflowy instead gives you many powerful benefits.

Why use Workflowy to bullet journal

Working with a digital system lets you take bullet journaling to another level. The physical limits of paper disappear plus you get tons of new super powers.
